I wany to open up an all human hair store supply. I want to be located in Springfield Massachusetts. Most likely I'll only have 2 employees, myself and my sister. I want to buy items in bulk online then sell them to customers.retail hair supply and salon with booth rental.

Registering Your Own Small New Store Business

Most stores sell merchandise so the first thing is to get a sellers permit to buy merchandise wholesale and sell it retail.

Aside from that, you then need to select your business structure: Sole Proprietor, Partnership, LLC or Corporation.  

The above step is important business all  Store  documents will be filed under the type of business organizational structure.

Of course, you can have a brick and mortar, road side, mobile or online store.  All of these require the same licensing not because of the type of location but because there  are all businesses.

After that, you will need to obtain a business permit.  

This is a general business permit that all new businesses must obtain.

More than 31% of the GNP, though, less than $5,000,000.00 is generated through retail sales business.

Though less than 2 million retail businesses, there is about 1.6 ml retail stores not including online retail.   Note that in the majority of the cases you do not need to obtain a business permit that is specifically for your type of business.

You only need a general business permit.  In addition, all businesses must be identified by a business tax ID called a federal tax ID number or Employer Identification Number (EIN).

If you file as a sole proprietor, you can use your social security number instead of the federal ID.

  Then, 99% of all stores require a sellers permit if you sell merchandise wholesale or retail.  The sellers permit is also called state ID, wholesale ID, resale ID, or re-seller license.  

If you are an employer, you will need a federal employer Number and a State Employer Number.

If you do business as a name other than your full legal name, for example, you do business as "ABC Discount Store," you will need to file a doing business as (DBA) filing.  

Finally, you have the option or incorporating or forming an LLC. Setting up as one of these corporate entities allows you not to file a DBA.  I wany to open up an all human hair store supply. You can choose to be a(n) Hair Supply Store :

  • Sole Proprietor,
  • LLC,
  • Corporation or
  • Partnership.
    After you decide and select your business entity, you need licensing.



Springfield Business Tax Registration ( Business License)
All businesses including home, online or mobile BUSINESS need a BUSINESS license because they are BUSINESSES.



A(n) Hair Supply Store business doing business under an assumed business name in Hampden County i.e. you are a business with a trade name other than the owner's legal (full name) name are required to get a(n) assumed business name certificate. ย  E.g. you venture into a(n) Hair Supply Store business and you give it a trade name such as "Excellence Hair Supply Store & Associates". You will need to register an assumed business name certificate.

In addition note that in MA you may also need a seller's permit if you sell merchandise that is taxable. ย (A.K.A state id, wholesale, resale, reseller certificate, about $39 for most states).

Note: All businesses need a federal tax ID number except sole proprietors that are not employers and are not independent contractors.
An independent contractor is a self employed business person that receives more than $600 per year from anyone of his or her clients.
IRS rule: The client must issue a 1099 form to the independent contractor and the independent contractor must have a federal tax ID. However, even sole owners may obtain a federal ID and use it as a business tax ID instead of using their own social security number as a business tax ID number.
However, all other licenses that apply to sole proprietors as discussed here are requited regardless of getting a federal tax ID number.


In addition you will need a federal and a state EIN if you will hire employees. I.e., a MA Federal Tax Id Number ($29) ย and a(n) MA ย State Employer Tax Numberย ย 


Instead of filing a fictitious business name DBA Filing (about $49 plus state and legal newspaper publication fees) in Springfield,ย Incorporate in MA ย orย form a(n) MA LLC

You have a choice to file a DBA or form an LLC or incorporate. There is a cicrcumstance that you may not need to register a trade name and that is when you use your full name as a business name if you use your full legal name as a trade name.
Also note that even using your first and last name may not help you avoid filing a DBA if the name has a suffix such as "& sons" etc.



If you do form an Other llc or incorporate (about $49 plus state fees for most states) your Hair Supply Store business instead of just filing a fictitious business name (dba), it will help you avoid personal liability from wrongs arising from your business dealings and you will not have to file the Springfield business name.
